Huron City Schools Nutrition Services

Ever wonder how we serve so many colorful, yummy foods every day at such a low price to students and their families? Teamwork! Our knowledgeable staff combines fresh, local ingredients with government commodity foods to prepare menus that meet or exceed our high standards. These meals include plenty of choices, are packed with good nutrition, taste great and are valued-priced. What a deal! We create and serve foods that students get excited about. Menus are planned according to student acceptability of food items, dietary guidelines, cost and ease of production and serving logistics. The United States Department of Agriculture (UDSA) determines the portions by age group to better meet the food and nutritional needs of today's children. These serving standards are designed to give children at each grade level 1/3 of their daily nutritional requirements at each meal.  All Huron City Schools (except Shawnee) follow the UDSA Offer vs. Serve provision as part of the National School Meals Program. This provision allows students to decline either one or two food items of which they do not intend to eat. This helps reduce food waste and keep meal costs down. It is important to note that the schools are required to offer all students all required food items at every meal but allowing the student to decide which items they may not want. Every student at Shawnee receives all meal components.

Last year the Food Service Department participated in a "Farm to School" programby purchasing fresh fruit and vegetables from local farmers. Not only did this allow us to offer items "straight from the farm" but sometimes items not common to our customers. We will be continuing this successful program.

We are a "peanut-aware" not a peanut free district. We take great pride in working with parents, students and the school nurses with this and all types of allergies. By doing this it allows those students to enjoy a school meal too! If your student has an allergy, or intolerance, please feel free to contact the Food Service Director for a required medical form. Check the nutrient analysis for product information also.

We follow a five-week cycle menu. This type of menu has proven to be widely accepted by parents, students and staff. Check below to see what's cooking at your school!

Meal Payment:

Pre-paying helps the students avoid losing their money on the way to school and assures where dollars are spent. Meal payments do not expire and carryover from year to year and school to school. Please contact the cafeteria cashier at your students building if you need specific information or have concerns about their account. You may send a check with your child for any amount. Please write your child's name in the memo portion of the check to ensure proper deposit. Separate checks need to be sent for each child unless they are in the same building.

EZ-Pay Online Payments

Huron City Schools continue to offer an online meal payment program called "EZ·PAY". You are now able to pay for your children's meals and student fees using any Visa or MasterCard (including Debit Visa and Debit MasterCard). Being registered in this program allows you the opportunity to monitor your child's meal account balance, view the last two weeks of purchases and payments plus receive an email when their account is below $10.00. Instructions for using this program are listed below. If you have any further questions, you may email Gary Larizza or Sue Whitaker by clicking on their names.
